Ordering Is Moving to AI

If you open ChatGPT or Claude right now and ask it to order you lunch, it’ll do a pretty good job of finding a restaurant near you, picking something off the menu based on what you tell it you want, and walking you through the whole thing. Then it’ll tell you to go open an app or pull up a website and do the actual order yourself. Which honestly kind of defeats the point. The AI got you 90% of the way there and then handed it back to you right at the last step, which is the step that takes the most friction to get through.

That’s the problem Layout is solving. We’re building the infrastructure that lets the AI actually finish the job, so when you ask it to order something, it places the order. You don’t have to do anything after that.

The way it works depends on the restaurant. For restaurants that are directly connected to Layout, the order goes through our POS integration, which is faster and has no fees on the restaurant’s end. For restaurants that aren’t connected yet, we use an agentic flow that handles the checkout process on their existing site or app without them having to do anything on their end. Either way, the order goes through. On the payment side, we use card tokenization and generate a single-use virtual card for each transaction, so your actual card number never ends up sitting in some restaurant’s system.

The thing I want to be clear about is that Layout is not trying to be another ordering app. There are already too many of those. The goal is to be the layer underneath all of it, the infrastructure that makes ordering work regardless of what interface the person is using. If someone is using an AI assistant and asks it to get them food, Layout is what makes that possible. If a developer is building something and wants to add ordering capability to it, they hit our API and it just works. That’s the version of this I find interesting to build, not another consumer app, but the thing that makes the whole category work.

Layout isn’t live yet, but if you’re a restaurant owner who wants to get connected before launch, or just someone who wants to follow along, I wrote more about the full vision over here: Ordering Is Moving to AI. Here’s What’s Missing.
